Wisconsin State Human Relations Association Awards

The association has three awards that it presents to nominees. The one award, called the "Outstanding Human Relations Educator Award" is given to a Wisconsin educator who has demonstrated a personal commitment to human relations principles. The other two awards, the "Distinguished Service Award" and "Service Appreciation Award", are presented to members of the association who have contributed to the work of the association and/or have served as officers of the association. The Association also recognizes students through its recognition program, detailed 'Awards.'

Student Awards

For all students attending school in districts that participate in Open Enrollment and all students attending school in the State of Wisconsin.  Deadline for submission is November 1, 2007.

Rules:

  • All essays must address the theme to be eligible for consideration. The theme for 2007 is: "Building a Just Society: How I Can Make a Difference."
  • All essays must be written in clear and legible English. All first and second place winners in each group (college, high school, middle school, elementary school) will be published in the WSHRA newsletter.
  • The length of the essay must be: Elementary (100-200 words), Middle School (200-300 words), High School (300-500 words), and College (500-700 words).
  • Parents/teachers please note: The number of words MUST be checked and recorded at the end of each essay. Every word will be counted except dates, which will be counted at one word. Essays without the number of words recorded will not be considered.
  • The essay must be hand written in ink, or preferably for high school and college students, typed and double-spaced.
  • The following must be written in ink or typed on a 3x5 index card and stapled to the essay: contestant's name, address, phone number, grade, racial/ethnic group, name and address of school, name of school principal.

Names should not appear on the essay. Essays become property of the WSHRA and will not be returned.

Judging:

  1. All essays that meet requirements will be accepted. Essays should be sent to:

  2. All essays will be judged by a committee selected by the WSHRA. The committee will determine winners in each grade category and in the following racial/ethnic group to allow for the broadest participation: Black/African American, Asian American/Pacific Islander, White/European American, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Hispanic/Latino
  3. Essays will be judged on:
  • Originality and creativity;
  • Content and clarity of expression;
  • Grammar and composition.
